Karon Beach
Karon Beach is very long, 5km (3 miles), with fine white sand that squeaks when you walk on it throughout its entire length. At the north end, in front of the lake, the beach is usually deserted, making it a great spot to go if you want the beach to yourself. Sea turtles are occasional nocturnal visitors, laying their eggs in the sand at night time. If you see any turtles or their tracks you should let your hotel know and they'll contact Phuket Marine Biological Centre who will incubate the eggs in safety. In the Northeast monsoon season (November to April) there are very few waves and the water becomes crystal clear. In the Southwest monsoon season (May to October) there can be heavy swell. Pay attention to the red warning flags when they're flying.
Kata Beach
Kata's 1.5km (1 mile) strip of golden sand is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket due to the combination of it's beauty, facilities and activities. Hundreds of people come each day to soak up the sun and take advantage of all on offer. Often busy but never crowded this beach is perfect in many ways.
During the north-east monsoon season (November to April) the warm sea is as flat as a pancake, crystal clear and turquoise in colour.
The south-west monsoon season (May to October) can make for slightly rougher swimming conditions, but it's this time of year that the surfers flock to enjoy the smallish waves. Rarely do the red flags come out, the days they do you probably wouldn't want to go the beach anyway.
Late in the year as the waters turn calm, Kata bay becomes populated with 100+ beautiful yachts which arrive from all over the region, some even circumnavigating, to compete in December's King's Cup Regatta, Asia's premier sailing event.
Nai Harn beach
Nai Harn beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket with its excellent water quality. It's encompassed on both sides by jungle-covered mountains and there's a large freshwater lagoon inland.
Never overloaded, even in high season, Nai Harn's usually busier at weekends as it is popular with both Thais and expats. Many tourists who come to Phuket never make it to this wonderful stretch of sand. At the southern end the lagoon flows into the sea, creating a stream that children love to play in.
All year round the water is a comfortable 29C. Flat lake-like crystal-clear water invites you for a dip November to May.
From June to October on occasion there can be days where larger waves attract surfers and prevent swimming however these days aren't very common.
Nai Yang Beach
The northern part of the beach is part of Sirinath National Park and thus has no development. There are a few salas (open sided pavilions) in which to sit if the sun or the rain get too much and the beach has little of the commercial feel that pervades in Patong or Karon.
This northern area is a local favourite. If you happen to drive through on a weekend, you will see many families, groups of friends or couple having picnic parties in the large shady areas next to the beach. Many food vendors usually gather along the roadside to prepare all the classic Thai dishes, sweets, drinks and local fruits.
Further south is slightly more commercial and developed; bars and restaurants line the middle part of the beach. This is also where Indigo Pearl is, the only hotel currently open. Sea turtles are occasional nocturnal visitors who, lay their eggs in the sand at night time. This is a working beach and care should be taken to stay away from fishermen's nets and equipment. During high season, walking toward the north will give you unique views on planes approching phuket and landing at Phuket International Airport.
Ya Nui lies
Ya Nui lies in the shadow of two of Phuket's loveliest viewpoints; Phrom Thep and the viewpoint featuring large white windmill/propeller power generators.
It's a charming little cove featuring good snorkeling, kayaking and fishing. During high season there is a line of sun loungers for hire (200 baht a set) as well as a stand that rents out masks, fins, kayaks and body boards for very reasonable prices.
At this time of year there is also an ad hoc restaurant. The sand is beautifully soft and children love to collect shells on this beach.
An island called Koh Keyao Noi stands 700 metres out in the sea and in calm weather yachts moor just off the coast and it is possible to paddle out to explore the coral or to pay a visit to neighbouring Nai Harn. In rougher weather local fishermen climb the rocky promontory to cast off or simply brave the waves with casting nets.
Surin Beach
Surin is a magnificent long uncluttered beach but in low season, care must be taken when swimming as surf can be rough and tides strong. During the calm months, Surin's clear waters are good for snorkelling or kayaking. Boogie boarding and surfing are also popular activities.
Surin is the site of Thailand's second-oldest golf course, now being developed into a public park.
Koh Bon
Koh Bon is located about 20 kilometres north of island #9 and features one of the only vertical walls in Thailand. The dive site is on the southwestern point and consists of a 33 metre wall facing the small cove, and a step-down ridge that carries on to depths of over 45 metres. Leopard sharks are common on the ridge and on the sandy flats below the wall. Although the soft corals are not as high-profile as they are in the Similans, the colours of the corals are radically different and include shades of turquoise, yellow and blue, besides the more common pinks and purples. Koh Bon is one of the better places to see manta rays, especially towards the end of the season when there is more plankton in the water.
Laguna Phuket
This was in a beautiful location, it was a paradise!! Perfect for honeymooners (as we were), family vacation, business, whatever... The room was spacious,huge bed and the sunken bath was lovely. Can't fault the service, friendly and efficient. We had Buffet breakfast everyday in the Bird of Paradise restaurant, and had dinner and lunches at the other restaurants, absolutely first class cuisine. The Pool is amazing,it seems to go for miles! I can't stress enough how fantastic this place is, and the Angsana Spa is the perfect way to wind down and relax with their excellent massages and Spa treatments.Although it was just the two of us, we took notice that families were well catered for, with great facilities and activities for children. In our opinion, worth every cent. We can't wait to go back! (This time with the kids)
